About Me… Charlie Cottone

The main thing I can say about myself with total confidence is that I'm really resourceful, much like a scrappy dog.

My approach is ‘function over form’. I try to create clean environments, showcasing a project’s potential.  ”What’s the pourpose of this thing… how do I articulate it’s intent.”

This could be my reaction to failing to become a fine-artist at 18 years old. My resourcefulness blossoms when I don’t know how to make something work or understand how to put it together. After a string of smashing my head into computer screens, guitar amps, crappy tables and botched screen prints… I’ve learned how to escape a project with a pretty thorough understanding of what I just did and how I can streamline my process and make it better next time.

Early On

I grew up skateboarding, making skateboard ramps and printing flyers for my awful bands. At 18, I wanted to be an Impressionist painter… turns out I was better suited to be a shelf stocker at AC Moore. That’s cool, cuz that’s where I bought my first screen printing kit. Been nothing but good times since. My U-Arts portfolio was a bunch of my band’s t-shirt, 7″ record covers, CD package designs that never saw the printers and a few skateboards I painted on. Thankful, they let me in… and now I owe the government a pile of money.

While at U-Arts I studied:

  • information dissemination
  • public art
  • print making
  • adolescent phycology
  • and Director (a flash predecessor that lost it’s relevancy in 2003, )

I spent most of my college carrer wheat-pasting large screen prints and finding new ways to document my adventures. It wasn’t till the very end of college that I got into HTML. It was a really shallow understanding, but it was my start. I think this was the first iteration of my portfolio.

Here’s a few gems from that time:

After College I got really into Muay Thai. I had a successful run as an amateur, but gave it up when I concluded that I would rather not get punched in the face anymore. Since then, I’ve stopped thai boxing and got REALLY into playing soccer. It’s way less stressful. I got deeper into web design and development as a way to make money and retroactively acquired a passion for it.

I continue to break things and learn how to fix them. I bought a really crappy motorcycle in 2010… that’s currently what I’m waisting time and money on.
